Trade Centre rescuers 'to get posthumous
medal'
Rescue workers who died in the World Trade Centre terror attacks may be
awarded a posthumous medal made from metal salvaged from the ruins.
The firefighters, police officers and ambulance workers who died at the
scene of the September 11 strike are likely to be the first recipients of a
new Medal of Valour.
The awards are likely to be given posthumously once a new resolution has
been rushed through Congress and signed by George W Bush.
The resolution to honour the almost 400 emergency workers missing or
found dead in the remains of the World Trade Centre was introduced by
New York congressman Joseph Crawley.
He said: "By honouring the fallen rescue personnel, we honour the living
who continue to do their duty every day."
A Washington insider said there were also plans to honour emergency
workers and civilian survivors of the collapse who distinguished
themselves with acts of bravery with a medal.
There are also talks over how to honour civilians who died in the Pentagon
attack and the passengers of United Flight 93, who are believed to have
prevented an attack on the White House or Capitol building by forcing the
plane to crash in rural Pennsylvania.
