A teen who tried to save his dog when it fell through the ice has died.

John Barrett, 17, fell through the ice on Oak Orchard Creek in the Town of Shelby in Orleans County, NY shortly after 6 a.m.

Authorities spent several hours breaking through the ice, searching the water. Barrett's body was found in about four feet of water just before 1 o'clock.

"It's always tough to do it," said Jeff Schnars of the U.S. Coast Guard. "But it makes us work harder to know that we're doing our best, to do what we can, to not end up in a great situation. But give some closure to the family."

Barrett was a junior at Medina High School. The school notified students Friday afternoon, and counselors were on hand to help them.

The recovery effort involved personnel from three different counties. Many were volunteer firefighters, as well as divers.
