ROCK HILL, S.C. – A 2-year-old girl drowned in Lake Wylie while camping with her family Friday afternoon. According to the York County Sheriff’s Office, a mother and her child were camping with adult and other children in an area near the Lake Wylie Dam.

The mother was pitching a tent while the other adult watched the children as they played near the edge of the water.

Police said it started to rain and the adults gathered up the children and realized the toddler was missing. They searched the water for about 10 minutes until they found the girl, according to Sgt. Tim Smith, York County Sheriff’s Department. The girl was pulled from the water and a person at the scene performed CPR until paramedics arrived.

The girl was transported to Piedmont Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.

Even though the area where the girl drowned is not a campground, police said it is OK to camp there.
