A man from York drowned off the coast of Tybee Island in Georgia on Thursday, police confirmed over the weekend.

Police say a current swept away 36-year-old Kent Sandefur, of York, and a 6-year-old boy.

Witnesses say Sandefur pushed the boy safely to shore, but Sandefur later disappeared in the water.

Rescuers called off the search for the 36-year-old Friday morning. Sandefur had been at Tybee Island with a church group from York.

The group was enjoying a secluded part of beach on the island where signs are posted warning of dangerous currents in the area, but the section of beach is so secluded there are no lifeguards assigned there.

Cpl. Jason Heckman with the Tybee Police Department said, "The closest area we have lifeguards is the beach access was referring to south of us which is about a quarter of a mile away."

Sandefur is survived by his wife, 4-year-old son and an infant girl he and his wife planned to adopt.

Tybee police say lifeguards will still do their normal patrols of north beach and the coast guard will also do routine fly-bys to see if they can spot any signs of Sandefur.
