A 14-year-old Fall River boy who survived a family boating tragedy by swimming to shore spoke out about his ordeal Monday.

Christopher Duarte and his father were the only survivors after the speedboat they were in overturned this past weekend. Christopher's mother, cousin and friend, all died. His aunt is still missing.

The group had been returning home to Fall River from a relative's house in Swansea, Mass. Christopher's mother, Edwina, his father, Allen, his aunt Kelleigh Ouellette, her boyfriend Rick, and Christopher's cousin, Jimmy, were in the boat.

"All I heard was my mom screaming for help out in the water. Rick was holding onto my cousin Kelly. My cousin Jimmy was just floating in the water. He had a life jacket on," Christopher said. "I started swimming toward the shore."

Christopher showed up on the doorstep of Karen and David Rose, shivering with cold. His bare feet were cut and bleeding.

"He had one thing on his mind. He wanted to save his family. He was very brave," Karen Rose said.

Despite his efforts to find help, his mother did not survive. His father is hospitalized in critical condition.

Also among the dead are 23-year-old James Duarte, Christopher's cousin, and 39-year-old Richard Doehler. Ouellette is still missing and presumed dead.

The Coast Guard suspended its search for the Ouellette's body.

Investigators said that a cold front, which caused choppy seas, causing choppy seas, played a role in the accident.
