Coast Guard Finds 2 Missing Teen Sailors

Boys Did Not Return From 3-Mile Sailing Trip Sunday

Officials said Alex Young, 18, of Acton, Mass., died at Salem Hospital after he was found drifting in the frigid surf about 2:30 a.m. Monday. His friend, Chris Jackson, 15, of Marblehead, swam to Misery Island about a half-mile from Beverly's West Beach. He was found about 6:40 a.m. and was taken to the hospital in good condition but suffering from hypothermia.

Rescue crews spent the night searching for the two teen boys whose sailboat overturned in rough surf Sunday night.

NewsCenter 5's Gail Huff reported that the search efforts were concentrated near the lighthouse at Marblehead Harbor, where search crews located the boys' overturned 15-foot sailboat Monday morning.

Young was found wearing a life jacket. He was unresponsive and was taken to Salem Hospital.

Authorities said the two boys were taking a 3-mile excursion Sunday, sailing from Beverly to Manchester-By-The Sea. They left Beverly about 6 p.m. and apparently got caught in 4-to 6-foot waves on their return. It was foggy and rainy on the water. Their parents reported them missing about 8 p.m.

Harbormasters from Marblehead, Manchester-By-The-Sea, Salem and Beverly, Mass., were out all night assisting the Coast Guard boats and helicopter in the search for the boys.

One Teen Dead, One Survives After Sailing Accident

Boys' Sailboat Flips Over In Rough Water

A sailing accident off the coast of Beverly claimed the life of an Acton, Mass., teen.

NewsCenter 5's Gail Huff reported that 18-year-old Alexander Young was sailing with a friend Sunday afternoon when their boat capsized. Early Monday morning, a Coast Guard rescue boat found Young floating in the water in his life jacket. He was taken to Salem Hospital, but did not survive.

His friend, Chris Jackson, 15, survived after the 15-foot boat they were sailing capsized in rough waters between Beverly and Manchester-By-The-Sea.

Jackson was found about 6:40 a.m. after spending the night on Misery Island, which he swam to about a half-mile off the coast of West Beach in Beverly. He was taken to Salem Hospital and then Children's Hospital later Monday morning. He was suffering from hypothermia and fluid in his lungs.

"We saw him on the beach, and we thought what was that guy doing on the beach? I could not believe it was him standing there. After he entered the water, he did not have a lot of recollection after that and woke up on the island," Coast Guard Chief Tim Hudson said.

The Coast Guard found Young floating in the frigid water in a life jacket about 2:40 a.m. He was unresponsive when they pulled him from the water and they rushed him to Salem Hospital where he died five hours later.

"If they had not had life preserves, we would not have recovered either of them," Coast Guard Lt. Commander Lisa Ragone said.

The two teens shared a love of sailing, said the headmaster at the boys' school, the Landmark School in Beverly.

"Chris had his own boat. It was about a 15-foot day sailor, so I know he's been at it for a while. Apparently yesterday, sometime in the afternoon, if you all recall it was terrible weather forecast but the afternoon was good. They went out sailing. And sometime late afternoon, 5:30 or so, apparently they touched base on the beach over there, Endicott Beach, and they recognized that the winds were changing and they did the right thing, they called home and they said, 'We're on our way back,' and they were working their way back to Manchester when the boat must've flipped," said headmaster Robert Broudo.
