Derrick Kelly, 17, of Detroit Finney High School, was reportedly swimming with a few other students in the deep end when he went under.

A university spokesperson said the three lifeguards on duty reacted immediately and attempted to resuscitate the teen.

Emergency crews rushed Kelly to St. Joseph's Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Kelly's mother, Dare Redmond, wants to know what happened leading up to her son's death. She told Local 4 he couldn't swim very well and doesn't think he would risk going in the deep end.

"Something happened to him and I feel somebody is covering up something and not telling me the truth," Redmond said.

Kelly was part of an afterschool program organized by the Detroit School District, which had rented out the Eastern Michigan recreation center for the students.

Officials are waiting on final autopsy results to determine the exact cause of the teen's death.
