Minivan Plunges Through Ice

Bloodvein First Nation, CANADA
December 24, 2001

A man and a teenage boy are missing and feared drowned after a minivan carrying five people fell through thin ice on Lake Winnipeg Sunday.

The occupants of the van were crossing the lake at a narrow point near Bloodvein First Nation. Three male survivors scrambled onto solid ice and made a five kilometre walk to a nursing station. They were all treated at hospital for severe frostbite.

An RCMP dive team was on site until nightfall but hadn't turned up any sign of the two missing people. They say alcohol was not a factor in the accident.

Though the temperature was -20 C the day the accident happened, it hasn't been cold enough yet to open a winter road that runs across the lake.
