2012 Water Rescue Train-the-Trainer Academy
The Academy starts at 7:00 PM on Thursday, May 17 and continues through 3:30 PM on Sunday, May 20.
Water Rescue International Train-the-Trainer Academy
The Water Rescue International Train-the-Trainer Academy is a comprehensive training Academy designed to train and authorize representatives of Public Safety and Rescue organizations as Lifesaving Resources' Water Rescue Course Instructors. Graduates from this Academy are authorized to conduct Water Rescue Awareness, Operations, and Technician level courses within his/her individual department/agency. These courses meet and exceed NFPA 1670 Standard for Technical Rescue.
Water Rescue Instructor candidates must:
- be a minimum of 21 years of age
- be an active member of a Fire, Rescue, EMS, or Law Enforcement agency
- have the endorsement of the department's chief or training officer to participate
In addition, the Water Rescue Instructor candidate must demonstrate his/her proficiency in the water by passing the following pre-requisite swim test:
- swim continuously 100 yards while wearing a Personal Flotation Device (PFD)
- while in deep water, remove the PFD, surface dive to a depth of 9', recover a 10 lbs. brick and bring it to the surface
- support a 10 lbs. brick at the surface of the water, using legs only, for 1 minute
- surface dive and swim a distance of 35 feet underwater
Most all equipment will be provided by Lifesaving Resources for the practical sessions. In addition, Instructor candidates must have:
- bathing suit
- long pants
- t-shirt
- tennis shoes or wetsuit booties for use in the water
- wetsuit or swiftwater dry suit
- wetsuit gloves
Instructor Candidates will be required to sign an Instructor Agreement and their department/agency will be required to complete an Authorized Provider Agreement. As an authorized provider of Lifesaving Resources' Water Rescue Courses, the Instructor candidate and the department's chief or training officer must agree to the following:
- The curriculum must be conducted as defined in the Lifesaving Resources' curriculum materials, including:
- All safety and rescue procedures must be adhered to during the conduct of all Lifesaving Resources' Water Rescue courses
- Each Water Rescue course student must receive his/her personal copy of the Lifesaving Resources' Water Rescue Course Guidebook and decal at a price of $15 per book/decal
- Upon completion of the course, each graduate must receive a Lifesaving Resources' course completion certificate and insignia at a price of $5 per certificate & insignia
- Instructor must submit a Record of Course Completion within two weeks from the course completion date
Upon successful completion of this Academy training program, participants will be certified as Water Rescue and Swiftwater Rescue Techncians and will be authorized to conduct Water Rescue Awareness, Operations, and Technician level courses, and Swiftwater Rescue, on behalf of their own Public Safety and/or Rescue agency.
The Water Rescue Train-the-Trainer Academy is a very comprehensive and intensive training Academy. Instructor candidates must be well-rested and prepared to participate in this rigorous weekend schedule as follows:

Gerald M. Dworkin
Gerald M. Dworkin (Gerry) is a professional Aquatics Safety & Water Rescue Consultant for Lifesaving Resources, LLC and is the author of the "Lifeguard Competition Guidebook", the "Professional Aquatics Safety Seminar Guidebook", the "Water Rescue Course Guidebook", and the "Ice Rescue Course Guidebook" (published by Lifesaving Resources Inc.) and "CPR for Infants and Children" (published by the Child Welfare League of America).
Gerry has an extensive background in Aquatics Safety, Water Rescue, Ice Rescue, EMS, Public Safety and Rescue. Along with his textbooks, he has written and published over 40 articles, and has consulted in over 250 drowning and aquatic injury litigation cases as both a Plaintiff or Defense Forensics Expert.
A graduate from the University of Bridgeport, Connecticut, Gerry has over 30 years experience as a Professional and/or Volunteer Firefighter and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), and has worked and consulted for the American Red Cross as a Health and Safety Services Professional/Consultant. As a frequent guest speaker and trainer in the Lifeguard and Aquatics Safety and Recreation sector, as well as the Public Safety and Rescue sector, Gerry is considered an expert and qualified educator throughout the country.
In 2010, Gerry was named by Aquatics International Magazine as one of the Power 25 Aquatic Professionals in the U.S. He serves on the Board of Directors of the National Drowning Prevention Alliance (NDPA.org); the Sounding Board for the National Headquarters of the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Curriculums; and on the Advisory Committee for the International Swimming Hall of Fame.
Gerry has appeared on such national media broadcasts as CNN; MSNBC News; CBS' Early Show; ABC's Good Morning America; NBC's Today Show; The Weather Channel; The Discovery Channel; and the Fire Emergency Training Network (FETN) and is frequently contacted for interviews by publications throughout the U.S. on matters pertaining to submersion incidents; Lifeguard operations and management; submerged vehicle incidents; aquatics safety; water rescue; and ice rescue.
Greg LeBlanc
Greg is a 2003 graduate of the Ice Rescue Train-the-Trainer Program and is the newest member of our Ice Rescue Training Programs Faculty. Greg is a Lieutenant and Emergency Medical Technician with the Northwood Fire and Rescue Department in Northwood, New Hampshire.
Robert Shields
Bob is a Captain for the Cumberland Rescue Service in Cumberland, Rhode Island with 20 years experience as a Paramedic and Firefighter. He is the team coordinator for the Cumberland Water Rescue Team and co-coordinator for the Blackstone Valley Regional Dive Team. Bob is a graduate of the Lifesaving Resources' 2006 Water Rescue Train-the-Trainer Academy and the 2008 Ice Rescue Instructor Train-the-Trainer Academy, and also assists Lifesaving Resources in the conduct of Lifeguard In-service Training Programs.
David Cianfrini
Dave has 20+ years in Law Enforcement and is currently a part-time detective with the Sandown (NH) Police Department. He is currently on faculty with Lifesaving Resources as a Water/Swiftwater Rescue and Ice Rescue Instructor. He has experience as an EMT-B; as a PADI Advanced Open Water Diver; as a competitive swimmer; and as a Red Cross Lifeguard. He currently works as a Corporate Consultant and Trainer for a company teaching and implementing continuous improvement systems.
Water Rescue Train-the-Trainer Tuition
Tuition for each Instructor candidate must be paid at the time of registration.
Tuition includes:
- 3 nights lodging; Thursday, Friday, and Saturday
- 8 meals including:
- 3 meals on Friday (breakfast, lunch and dinner)
- 3 meals on Saturday (breakfast, lunch and dinner)
- 2 meals on Sunday (breakfast and lunch)
- CD PowerPoint Presentation with videos
- Instructor's Manual
- Other course materials
Upon receipt of registration and payment, a confirmation packet will be sent to the instructor candidate that contains directions and additional information, including local motel information for participants requiring lodging after the conclusion of the training Academy.
Policies
Cancellation and Refund Policy
Space is limited in all Lifesaving Resources' sponsored training programs. Therefore, payment for tuition (via check or credit card) or an agency purchase order is required prior to participation. Your fee is refundable - less a 15% administrative processing fee if you cancel more than 14 days prior to the scheduled course or seminar date. Notice of cancellation must be provided in writing via Mail, Fax or E-mail. Please be sure you receive a confirmation of cancellation in return. Cancellation notifications less than 14 days prior to the course or seminar date will result in forfeiture of the entire tuition. Substitutes are welcome. Lifesaving Resources, LLC reserves the right to cancel any scheduled course or seminar due to insufficient registrations.
