INDIANAPOLIS -- A 2-year-old boy who spent a number of minutes underwater in a car that had rolled into a pond over the weekend was in critical condition Monday.
Quyjhon Adams was pulled out of the submerged car by Perry Township firefighter Paul Smith around 3:10 p.m. Saturday at the pond, located near the 4900 block of Southport Road, RTV6's Chris Bavender reported.
Medics revived the boy before he was transported to Methodist Hospital. Quyjhon had a pulse, but he was not breathing on his own, Bavender reported.
Police and witnesses said the car (shown at right being pulled out of water) had been parked parallel to the pond, and people were fishing from it.
When the people were about to leave, the car wouldn't start, so they tried to push the vehicle -- with the child sitting in a back seat -- up an embankment, witnesses said.
The pushers lost control, and the car rolled into the water. The car filled with water and submerged in about 30 seconds, witnesses said.
Authorities were called, and firefighters arrived around 2:55 p.m.
Smith (pictured, left), without diving gear, said he was able to stand on the car while looking for a way to get to Quyjhon.
"I was standing on the car and I noticed the back windshield," Smith said. "I was able to punch that out, kick as much as I could out with my heel, and I went back down, found the child, and brought him up."
Another person who tried to rescue the boy also was taken to Methodist after he suffered an asthma attack and swallowed a lot of water. That person was later OK, Bavender reported.
