What Carl Keenan thought would be a relaxing day at the pool Sunday turned into a scene out of "Rescue 911."

The 22-year-old Kansas University student was heading for the Sundance Apartments swimming pool, 1407 W. Seventh St., when he noticed a little girl wandering around asking for someone to help her cousin at the pool.

"She wasn't screaming, just knocking on doors; I think she was scared and in shock," Keenan said. "I got to the pool, and there was a little girl face down at the bottom."

Keenan dove in and removed the girl, 7, from the deep end, and a neighbor called police.

"I turned her over on her side and she was unconscious, but she was still breathing," Keenan said. "The paramedics arrived, and she started to come to and was crying."

Sundance Apartments resident manager Jessica Martin ran to the pool just after Keenan rescued the girl. Martin said the child lives at the complex, but she would not disclose her name.

Captain Pat Talkington, Lawrence-Douglas County Fire and Medical, said the girls were not wearing bathing suits.

"I don't think she was swimming," he said of the girl found in the pool. "I don't think they were supposed to be at the pool."

The girl was driven to Lawrence Memorial Hospital. While her official condition was not disclosed, Talkington said she was doing well at the scene.

Lawrence police Sunday would not release any information on the girl.

Medics and police responded quickly, but the hero of the day was a civilian, Talkington said.

"I'm going to talk to the chief about this because I think this gentleman (Keenan) deserves some recognition," he said. "In all honesty, he's the one who saved her life."

Keenan, a sports management major, said he did what anyone would have done in his situation. "I just kind of happened upon it; I was at the right place at the right time," he said. "I hope she's going to be all right."
