CALGARY - Olympic diver Jeff Liberty is being called a hero after rescuing a pregnant and diabetic woman whose car plunged into the cold water of the Bow River Monday afternoon. Jeff Liberty was walking his dog along the riverbank near Deerfoot Trail and Southland Drive when the woman's car left the road, went through a chain-link fence, across a field, and into the river. Cpt. John Conley, with the Calgary Fire Department, says Liberty acted quickly and managed to save 22-year-old Shannon Roberts. "When he saw the situation, he took some of his clothes off, went into the water and actually he got the lady to open up her window so that he could pull her out," says Conley. "She started panicking a little bit and he grabbed the lady pulled her out and pulled her to shore." Conley says the fire department will recognize Liberty for his actions in a ceremony. Conley also says Roberts apparently suffered a diabetic reaction.
She's listed in stable condition in hospital and is being treated for
mild hypothermia. |
