A South Florida man spent what were probably the longest seven minutes of his life stuck in his car at the bottom of a canal. Albert Cane, 88, was driving along Lauderdale Drive in Plantation Thursday night when he lost control. His Mercury Marquis (pictured, right) ended up in a canal in 15 feet of water -- Cane was trapped inside. A neighbor called 911. "I panicked and I keep saying to 911, 'It's going down, it's going down, hurry up," Al Derose said. "I seen the guy in there and I was like, 'I don't know what to do next' you know. The only thing I could think about was jump in and try to get him and everything before he sunk too deep. But by the time I got in the water he was already at the bottom," William Freeman said. When fire rescue divers pulled Cane out seven minutes later, he had no pulse, but paramedics were able to revive him and take him to the hospital. Cane is breathing this morning with the help of a ventilator, but doctors say that he is also conscious and alert. |
