DEMAREST - A 6-year-old borough boy drowned Tuesday afternoon at the Demarest Swim Club, authorities said.
Swimmers spotted the child, identified as Youngman Bae, at the bottom of the L-shaped pool about 5 p.m.
"The witnesses pulled him out," police Lt. James Powderley 3rd said.
Within seconds, he said, cardiopulmonary resuscitation was in progress. Youngman was taken to Englewood Hospital and Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead on arrival, a spokeswoman said.
Powderley said the boy's mother was on the property, and "a lot" of lifeguards were on duty. Detectives were treating the incident as an accidental drowning and did not suspect foul play, he said.
The Demarest Swim Club, on Wakelee Drive, is operated by a private association.
A man who answered the phone at the club Tuesday night said the staff was busy and could not comment.
Two people who are listed as contacts for the pool on the borough's Web site did not immediately return phone calls.
